The Green nations are the tribes and clans of plants and people who love plants: herbalists, gardeners, foragers, earth-centered ones such as Native Americans. We gather at Frost Valley to learn from each other, to network for the planet, to play, and to renew our commitment to live in beauty and walk in harmony on the Earth, our partner.

Wise Woman Center -- Workshops for Women
Join us this year for spirit healing and herbal medicine workshops, intensives, and apprenticeships with Susun Weed and other Wise Woman teachers. The Wise Woman Center in Woodstock NY exists to re-weave the healing cloak of the Ancients. This land, this sacred sanctuary for women is a place for the teachings of the Wise Woman way. The Goddess lives here, as do goats, fairies, green witches, and elders. Located between Woodstock and Saugerties, 5 miles from the NYS Thruway, the Wise Woman Center is easily accessible while private enough for nude swimming. You'll receive a map and directions when you register. Nourishing wild-food vegetarian meals are included with all workshops.

~ FEATURE ARTICLE ~

Fertility After Forty
by Susun S. Weed

The most fertile years of a woman's life are those between 18 and 28. Even into the mid-thirties, it is usually fairly easy to conceive and carry a pregnancy to term. During these years the hormones that control ovulation, enhance conception, and ensure a healthy pregnancy are usually made easily and in generous quantities. And detrimental life-style choices have not had decades of repetition to create chronic problems. The previous section deals with disturbances to that pattern; and the section following deals with herbal ways to decrease or control the teeming fertility of the twenties and early thirties.

But more and more women are waiting until their late thirties, early forties, even late forties, to have children. Is this too late? Are these destined to have high-risk pregnancies? Will these children have more birth defects?

The answer to these questions -- and others like them -- is "no!" for wise women who enlist the help of green allies to increase fertility, insure conception, prevent birth defects, and promote a healthy pregnancy and an easy delivery.

Increasing Fertility; Insuring Conception

Increase your chances of conception by meditating. Cultivating a calm attitude, not surprisingly, enhances fertility. Even taking a quiet five minutes alone just for you, free of all responsibilities, can bring big results if done frequently enough.

Use lunaception to time your ovulation so you have the best odds of conceiving. It's fine to have sex in the weeks before ovulation, especially if the sex is focused on the woman and her orgasm, but do save your best efforts for those three night when your "moon" is full and bright and ready to frolic.

Orgasm on the part of the male is necessary for fertilization. The woman's orgasm does increase the possibility of conception. Women who experience orgasm after their partner (up to 40 minutes after his ejaculation) have the very best chance of becoming pregnant.

Red clover is the single best remedy for women over forty who want to conceive but can't -- even if there are medical reasons for not conceiving such blocked tubes, diabetes, ovarian cysts, internal scaring, endometriosis. There are many heart-warming success stories I could share about red clover! But suffice to say, drinking 2-4 cups of the infusion of the dried blossoms (neither tincture nor tea nor pills will work for this application) seems to do wonders for fertility, no matter what your age.

Preventing Birth Defects

Boosting your nutritional status makes birth defects less of a worry. Women who drink 2-4 cups of stinging nettle infusion daily and eat cooked leafy greens as well as lettuce salads are getting the abundant folic acid, calcium, magnesium, and other minerals needed to create a healthy baby. (Tinctures, pills, and teas contain little or none of these important nutrients.)

Vitamin E is an especially critical nutrient for fertility after forty and freedom from birth defects. Freshly-ground wheat flour, cold-pressed oils, and nut butters are all good sources of vitamin E, as are stinging nettle infusion and most cooked seaweed, such as kelp. The man's vitamin E level has as much, if not more, bearing on freedom from birth defects as does the woman's vitamin E level.

Avoid heat, both of you. Hot tubs, even prolonged soaking in a hot bath, can cause temporary (up to several months) sterility in some men. In women, it can endanger the early embryo and trigger a miscarriage or birth defects.

Avoid drugs, both of you, including alcohol, tobacco, coffee, as well as over-the-counter drugs and prescription drugs (except those you absolutely need). Your liver needs to be strong and so do your kidneys, so you can conceive and gestate a child. Instead of alcohol, which damages the liver, drink herbal infusions or alcohol-free wine or beer. Instead of tobacco, which may contribute to birth defects and low birth weight, try smoking a little dried peppermint, or, better yet, go for a walk. Instead of coffee, which challenges the kidneys, you may wish to drink green tea or black tea, or try coffee substitutes, especially the one made with dandelion roots. Instead of drugs to ease everyday aches and pains, use the gentle herbal remedies in this book instead.

Emotional Issues

Ambivalence about pregnancy and parenthood is normal and natural. But the older a woman gets, the more complicated her emotions about it may be. Add to her emotional soup pot strong opinions from family and friends, confusing information spread by the popular media, and fear-inducing pronouncements from "helpful" medical professionals, and that pot will be in danger of boiling over. Herewith then, some wise woman hints for keeping your cool in the midst of overt and covert confusion.

Contrary to current opinion, having children in your forties is ordinary and common worldwide. The Bible mentions several women having children in their fifties. What is unusual and unique to our time is having a first child in one's forties. Our mothers, mothers, mothers were having their fifth or eighth or tenth child when they were in their forties, not their first. If people tell you it just isn't done, close your eyes and call upon the spirit of your great, great, great, great grandmother, then smile and tell them it seems utterly ordinary to you.

Feeling tense and distressed about choosing or refusing motherhood? Motherwort tincture is my favorite calmative. A dose of 10-20 drops helps clear your mind, eases your tension, and assists you in discerning the best path to follow.

Bach flower remedies excel as helpers when you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed. Try:
Aspen when you feel anxious, apprehensive, or afraid of the unknown.
Mimulus when you are dwelling on a specific fear.
Elm when you feel overwhelmed or inadequate.
Red Chestnut when you are afraid for or worried about your baby to be.
Rock Rose when you are trembling, shaking, or weeping from anxiety or fear.

Regular gentle massage or Reiki treatments not only help you calm your distress, they also guide you in creating a strong center that's resistant to being pushed around by other people's opinions. Massage and/or Reiki also help prepare your mind/body for a healthy pregnancy and a safe birth.

Special Allies for Pregnant Women over Forty

The single most important herb for pregnant women over forty is comfrey (Symphytum uplandica hybrids). The leaves of the mature plant contain an abundance of constituents beneficial to mother and babe, including generous amounts of minerals, alantoin, proteins, and many vitamins. The minerals in comfrey help insure healthy nervous system growth; the fetus's developing brain uses the proteins. And the alantoin helps the mother's tissues become stretchy and elastic.

Aging can lead to increases stiffness and brittleness in bones and muscles, making pregnancy more arduous and painful, labor slower and more difficult, and injury more likely during birth. The hormones of pregnancy, which help soften and relax the pelvic tissues, may not be produced in adequate amounts. Comfrey comes to the rescue! Comfrey creates flexible and strong tissues throughout the body especially mucus surfaces (including intestines, uterus, bladder and vagina) the bones, the ligaments and tendons, and the skin.

Regular use of the leaf infusion, at least a quart a week, promotes a safe delivery by:
strengthening uterine muscles and preparing them to work easily and well.
strengthening perineal tissues so they become resistant to tearing.
strengthening uterine ligaments so the uterus does not prolapse
strengthening the bladder and increasing resistance to bacterial infection.
strengthening the vagina and helping to promote an environment hostile to infection.
providing easily assimilated minerals to prevent eclampsia and other complications.
helping the bones of the pelvis flex and open during birth.
increasing iron in the blood and thus forestalling post-partum hemorrhage.

I harvest the flowering stalks when they are fully formed; and I am careful to use the cultivated garden comfrey, which grows very tall and has purplish, pinkish, bluish flowers. I avoid wild comfrey which stays rather small, even when flowering, and has cream-colored, white, or yellowish flowers.

Some people feel that comfrey is not safe to use during pregnancy. Some people feel comfrey is not safe to use internally at all. I disagree. The roots of comfrey do contain compounds that are best avoided during pregnancy. (As do all parts of the wild plant.) In fact, I rarely use comfrey root because of the possibility of liver congestion, and I strongly caution those who have had hepatitis, chemotherapy, or alcohol problems to strictly avoid comfrey root. Yet even these people can benefit from use of comfrey leaf infusions.

Another important herbal ally for women over forty who desire a child is chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castii). It has been used in Africa and parts of Europe for several thousand years to discourage the male libido. In women, the effects seem to be the opposite! It may also be a fertility enhancer. Most importantly, chaste tree is a strengthening tonic for the pituitary gland, the master control gland for the endocrine system. Daily use of the tincture of the berries (1 dropperful/1 ml 2-3 times daily) had been shown to increase progesterone--the hormone of pregnancy--and luteinizing hormone--which promotes conception. Because it can lower prolactin levels, chaste tree is best discontinues during the last trimester of pregnancy.

Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) is not recommended for women over forty. In general, this herb promotes blood flow to the uterus and surrounding tissues. This can promote the growth of fibroids and increase the risk of post-partum hemorrhage. Ginger is a better warming tonic; motherwort is better at relieving pain; and raspberry is better at preparing the uterus for birth.

Of Egyptian-Turkish-Jewish descent, Juliette grew up in Manchester, England. At a young age, she decided to devote her life to the healing of animals and studied veterinary medicine in college. It was among the lab coats and dissection equipment that she began to feel the institution was not teaching her how to heal. She left the university to live a more natural life and learn about "true medicine" - herbs.

For more than 60 years Juliette lived with the Gypsies, nomads and peasants of the world, learning the healing arts from these peoples who live close to nature. Juliette's well-loved and now classic herbals for animals and for children have been a vital inspiration for the present day herbal renaissance and holistic animal care community. Now 85 years of age, Juliette's extraordinary life story is as colourful and as exciting as her tremendous wealth of herbal knowledge.

The Wise Woman Way demands that I be willing to see the perfection in every problem, that I be willing to allow breast cancer to have its own beauty, its own truth, and its own ways of offering health/wholeness/holiness.

The Wise Woman Way offers me a vision of completeness--with things just as they are--if I am brave enough to accept the possibility that any so-called problem is already absolutely perfect.

Perhaps breast cancer can bring us together, can unite our voices into a chant that vibrates with respect for women, for our breasts, and for the Earth's sweet breasts.

~RECIPE of the MONTH ~

Plantain Ointment

Pick Plantago leaves when they are vibrant and green. Chop them coarsely and pack loosely into a clean, very dry jar. Add olive oil, dislodge air bubbles with a knife or chopstick until the jar is filled to the very top. label and cap securely. Let sit out of direct sunlight, on a surface that won't be marred by oozing oil.

Decant after six weeks, pouring off the oil and squeezing out what remains in the plant material. Discard the herb. Grate one tablespoon of beeswax for every ounce of oil. Stirring constantly, heat the oil and beeswax until the wax melts, usually within a minute. Pour the liquid into small, wide-mouthed jars (a good excuse for buying marinated artichoke hearts) and cool.

Use this onitment lavishly for diaper rash, insect bites, all itches, and minor wounds. It heals, stops itching, checks bleeding, and eases pain.

Subject: Dear Susun

It's taking a great deal of courage for me to write this letter. I feel like I desperatly need to talk with you, or correspond with you about a health difficulty I am having. I hope and pray with all my heart you receive this letter and have an opportunity to respond to me.

Before I begin, let me say that I'm in the process of reading your book, Healing Wise, and i believe it is already having a life changing impact on me. Thank you!

I have been diagnosed with HPV (human papaloma virus) and chondoloma (genital warts caused by hpv) I'm in the midst of an outbreak that is unbearable to say the least. I'm fighing dispair and depression because i've been pushed aside and put on hold by doctors, who are eager to take my money (which i have little of) and not meeting my needs at all. I've undergone cryotherapy (freezing of the cervix) once, and am guessing will need to go through it again (if I'm ever lucky enough to score an appointment with these guys...it seems like no one cares)

I'm desperate to find a path to healing, and gain some relief from this. At this point, every day is a struggle mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically, and still i'm trying hard to follow your advice and searching for the gifts and knowledge all this can bring into my life. I very much want to learn about plants and their medicinal blessings, but as of right now I'm very much in the dark, and very much hurting.

Please take the time to reply with a specific plant(s), or some thoughts, or some steps I should take towards healing. HELP!! I'm all ears!!!!!I truely hope to hear from you. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge to those who are hungering to learn about life, health, wholeness.
With Love, Desperate

Subject: Use burdock for healthy cervix!

Susun's Response:
I hear you. I will write a bit here, but it would be best if we talk. I have a free consultation service on Tuesday nights. Call me at 845-246-8081 between 7:30 and 9:30 pm east coast time and I will be glad to talk with you. The line is of course busy most of the time, but keep trying. An auto-redial phone helps!

Meanwhile, you may wish to ally with burdock. You could buy a burdock root tincture at a health food store and take up to a dropperful of it 2-3 times a day. Of course, you can also find young burdock plants and dig up the roots and cook them or make your own vinegar or tincture. That is even more effective. Burdock is known to help reverse pre-cancerous changes on the cervix. In addition, red clover infusion (one ounce dried blossoms steeped for four hours in a quart of water) has been very useful uin restoring health to the cervix.

Hyssop tincture is an anti-viral; so is Hypericum. Either tincture could possible reverse the HPV.
Hope this gets you off to a good start. And please give me a call, any Tuesday up until Halloween.

Green Blessings,
Susun Weed

Subject: safe herbs for an iron deficient infant?

My nine and a half month daughter was recently found to be iron deficient. (Her count was at 60, whereas 80-100 is the normal range) Her doctor prescribed ferrous sulfate drops, as she felt that something more than just an iron rich diet was necessary. I prefer to use something more natural in the way of herbs, but I do not know which ones are safe for infants and at what quantities. Can you offer some suggestions?

I am a 49 year old female and have a "slight" (230) cholesterol problem. I own your book "Wise Women Ways the Menopausal Years". In this book there is indication that Valerian will help with cholesterol. But.... all my other research indicates that Valerian will help with sleeping problems and that all. Can you point me toward the herb that will help most? Thanks!

Subject: Motherwort tincture for a healthy heart..

Susun's response:
Did you know that over half of the people who have heart attacks in the USA have normal or low cholesterol? Did you know that the theory that high cholesterol causes or even indicates risk of heart attack is non existent? Did you know that postmenopausal women produce hormones that keep them healthy from cholesterol? For all these reasons, I believe that you do not have a problem.

However, we all need to eat diets that are rich in whole foods, especially whole grains, for optimum heart health; and we all need to exercise regularly to keep our hearts healthy. I think the best herb for you right now might be tincture of Leonurus cardiaca (motherwort). A dose is 10-20 drops taken 1-3 times a day.

Read more about this herb in my Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way. It will also teach you how to make nourishing herbal infusions and vinegars that keep the heart healthy. You can get a signed copy - Order from www.wisewomanbookshop.com

Subject: Menopause and Heart palpitations

It is the middle of the night and I can't find my copy of your book about menopause - I guess I'm going to have to get another one - since I love it -I probably lent it to someone .. who forgot to return it. At any rate, I recall that you had a section on heart palpitations. I am 55. When my husband passed away almost 5 years ago, I stopped menstruating immediately -- I've worked my way through hot flashes.

During the pastcouple of months, several nights a week, about one time per night, I awaketo what I think is my very rapidly beating heart. Usually, I also have to urinate and/or am very thirsty. Once I take care of those needs, I fall back asleep and am fine.

Tonight, it is starting to alarm me.. so I am searching for your book to see what it has to say -- I seem to recall that you said that this can sometimes occur during menopause and that it isn't a heart attack. I'll have to try to find your book in a store tomorrow, but am wondering if you might have some comments or suggestions. [right now I'm sipping on a cup of warm water to which I have added about 10 drops of Motherwort and 10 drops of Gaia Herbs St. Johnswort Supreme - in hopes that I will calm down and release some of my fear. I look forward to your reply.

Response from Susun's Daughter (Justine):
Sorry we weren't there for you last night. The warm water and tincture sounded good...
If you can, wait to buy the book, a newly revised edition is coming out this Halloween....

Here is what Susun says in her menopause book concerning heart palpitations, pages 99-101:

"Do your palpitations bring up thrilling memories and quivering fears, which are also your secret desires? ... Listen to your heart....Nourish your heart..."

Heart palpitations may accompany flashes during the menopausal years. Palpitations are not indicative of heart disease. They may be caused by electrolyte imbalances from fluid loss...[or] they may be triggered by strenous exercise and strong emotions.

Seek expert help if your palpitations leave you extremely breathless, very dizzy, or in great pain.

Rose flower essence calms and steadies the heart.

Close your eyes. Put one hand on your heart, the other on your belly or solar plexus. Breathe slowly for 2-5 minutes or until your heart is even and quiet.

Hawthorn is one of the slowest-acting but most reliable heat tonics known. Try 25-40 drops up to four times a day and don't expect results for over a month.

Fluid loss can cause palpitaitons. Drink lots of water; better yet, mineral-rich herbal infusions; best, fresh organic grape juice or grapes. Keep some by the bed to drink when you wake, at night and first thing in the morning.

Motherwort tincture, 10-20 drops with meals and before bed, tones the heart and helps prevent palpitaitons. Or, try 25-50 drops for immediate relief when your heart is pounding crazily.

Habits such as heavy smoking, large intake of caffeine, or regular use of alcohol increases the severity and incidence of palpitations during the menopause years.

Vitamin E (200-1200 IU daily) is frequently recommended as a remedy for menopausal palpitaitons.

Magnesium, especially the more absorbable types 9like magnesium gluconate) are very relaxing to the chest, heart, and lungs. Daily use of 500 mg, taken between meals, helps prevent palpitations and deepens sleep.

Heart palpitaitons may be caused by antihistamines such as Benadryl, Nyquil, Dimetapp.

So, based upon above info from Weed's book, you are doing some good stuff. Hope you find some more helpful solutions in the excerpts I copied for you from her book, Menopausal Years.

Let us know what works for you...We will let you know when the new book comes out so you can be one of the first to get a copy.

Love, Justine (Susun's daughter)

Thank you so much for your loving response!

Can't wait for the new book - I want to buy several copies to give as gifts to dear friends.

Are you and your mom aware of the Women's Dream Quest events at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco? There are three or maybe four a year and they are most amazing. They are centered around the labyrinth there. I went for the first time in July -- it was the most beautiful amazing healing empowering experience I have ever had! They are sponsored by a group called Veriditas.

Thanks much - again - I'll let you know how these different things work.

Can't wait for the new edition of Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way due out by Halloween!

Blessings to you and yours
