Curar sabiamente. Nuestros problemas como aliados.

Healing wise. Seeing our problems as allies
translated from
Seven Rivers of Healing Correspondence Course

Si no, seguiremos siendo víctimas.

_______________________________________________________________________

Quiero preocuparme.

Quiero sentirme fracasada; me hace pertenecer a mi familia.

Salud, integridad, sacralidad. ¡Qué alegrías nos traen nuestros problemas!

Verdes bendiciones,

Susun weed.

[Healing wise. Using our problems as allies]

One of the non-intuitive aspects of the Wise Woman Tradition and the Seven Rivers of Healing is the idea of nourishing our problems rather than fixing them (Scientific) or figuring out what we did wrong to cause them in the first place (Heroic).

We understand fixing broken things. And we have been taught to blame ourselves when we are sick. To view our problem as an ally, to embrace our problems as pieces of our wholeness, to want to embrace and to nourish our problem -- that is not the way our minds naturally tend. We must make an effort, we must change our habitual ways of thinking.

When we make the effort to open ourselves to our problems as hidden aspects of ourselves, magical and miraculous things can happen.

There is no waste in Nature. There are no toxins in Nature. There is nothing that needs to be fixed in Nature. Nature is about eating and being eaten. Nature chews up everything and uses everything in the service of more life.

Our personal worldview has to shift to allow us to see that that which bothering us as something useful and right. That shift itself is healing, no matter what else we do.

The Wise Woman does not ask "Why do I have a problem?" The answer to that question is always blame and guilt. The Wise Woman asks "What part of myself does this problem show me? How can I nourish that part of myself so it is less needy and has less control over me."

One way to do that is to ask: "What is the problem with the problem?"

[Here is an example. Let’s say I have acid refux/ heartburn due to hiatal hernia]

My problem: Acid refux/heartburn due to hiatal hernia
The problem with my problem is:
1. it is painful
2. i worry that it's damaging my stomach/esophagus
3. i feel like a failure that i can't make it stop w/out drugs (which don't always work and i can't afford anyway)

notice how these are the statements of a victim. this is the first layer. this is where most of us start when we have a problem. if we understand that we can act from power, then we will look for it. if not, them we will be further victimized.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
let's change the statements so they are in a voice of power. this will be our second layer.

we have to be sure to include ourselves. change any statement starting with it to a statement starting with I.
it is painful becomes i am in pain.

then, make hidden desire clear
i worry becomes i want to worry i feel like a failure becomes i want to feel like a failure

hopefully you are upset by what i just wrote. the second layer reveals the shadow self. the shadow self is the self we reject. when we say things that seem as untrue as i want to be in pain, when we feel our rejection of those statements, then we know we are near to the shadow.

we want to embrace the shadow. we want to nourish those needs which are usually hidden but show themselves in our problems.

say them out loud.
i want to worry
i want to feel like a failure
i want to be in pain

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
who is this? what does this person want? this is the third layer.

here are some third layer possibilities:

i want to worry; i feel useful when i worry
i want to worry; it is easier than doing something
i want to worry; it binds my energy and i feel safer

i want to feel like a failure; it matches my self image
i want to feel like a failure; then i needn't try any longer
i want to feel like a failure; it makes me part of my family

i want to be in pain; pain is a "home free card"
i want to be in pain; i have an excuse to take care of myself
i want to be in pain; other's feel sorry for me and are kinder to me

this is hard work. the closer you are to the truth, the harder it will be.
we are not looking for a way to change things and to make ourselves into perfect beings. we are looking for ways to nourish our wholeness, just as we are at this moment, with loving kindness.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the fourth layer makes statements from acceptance of the shadow. it gives a glimpse of the value of our problem and ways to change it if we wish.

i love my ability to worry. what other ways do i have to feel useful?
i love my ability to avoid action by worrying. it keeps me out of trouble.
i love binding my energy with worry. it keeps me from flying apart.

i feel safe and comfortable as a failure; success is frightening.
i would rather feel like a failure than admit how hopeless my dreams are.
i value my view of myself as a failure; it means i'm not a snob.

i am happy that i can feel pain; without it i wouln't know i was alive.
i am glad to have time off and have special attention from others and myself and i really don't know how to get it without being in pain.
i value my pain; i listen to my pain; i am allowed to love myself when i am in pain.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

at first, this seems like a crazy way to go about healing. i could just say "take 15 drops of dandelion tincture before meals and you will never have heartburn again and won't need drugs again either." i could share the healing miracle of slippery elm, which repairs damage to the esophagus and quells acid indigestion quickly. yes, i have the knowledge to get rid of the problem. i can cure.

healing is harder. wholing is deeper. holiness lies not in eliminating the problem but incorporting it and becoming a more complex person. health, wholeness, holiness. what joy our problems bring us.

Green Blessings,

Susun Weed
